Covering some 2,800 acres lying just off the North Norfolk coast, West Barsham Estate represents a remarkable example of the continuity of English country life. Over the last century, the estate has evolved from a traditional horse-worked farm into a modern diversified rural enterprise, while remaining in the stewardship of the Keith family for three generations.
West Barsham remained largely unchanged during the inter-war years. Farming was still labour-intensive, with horses providing much of the power on the land. Post-war mechanisation transformed the estate. Tractors increasingly replaced the Suffolk Punch horses which had served generations of farmers. Former horse stables remained in use until the 1960s, and recent restoration projects, including exclusive livery and high-end accommodation, have preserved many of these buildings. The estate is well known for high-quality wild-bird conservation, sporting excellence, exclusive hospitality, and productive arable farming.
The present hall was built during the early twentieth century by the great-grandparents of Susanna Soames, current custodian of the Estate. The house has remained at the centre of the diversified estate and has changed little in character since the 1950s.
Evolution and modernisation of the Estate have seen the conversion of nineteenth-century barns and stables into luxury accommodation. Interior designer Flora Soames, Daughter of Susanna and Jeremy Soames, played an important role in the restoration. Barsham Brewery was established in 2019, producing quality beers with provenance, using barley grown on the estate and water drawn from its own borehole.

Farming
At Barsham Estate, our in-hand farm looks after 2000ac of arable farming supplying local markets from our wheat, barley, oilseed rape, sugar beet and fresh peas. Some of our barley returns to the Estate to be used by our on-site brewery.

Wildlife & Conservation
Barsham has for many years been synonymous with its stewardship of the natural landscape and its abundant wildlife. Our bespoke stewardship schemes and in-house conservation team work in harmony to encourage biodiversity to thrive in areas of the Estate such as our forestry, natural wet meadows and grass parkland.

Brewery
Our story starts long before the first pint is poured. Across the Barsham Estate, generations of careful farming have produced some of the world's finest Maris Otter barley, grown in Norfolk's unique coastal climate before being malted just a few miles away and returned home to be brewed. Combined with pure water from our own borehole, every beer reflects the character of the land that created it. It's what we mean when we say we're proudly Norfolk Born & Brewed.
The Brewery
Barsham Brewery creates award-winning craft beers in one of the estate’s ancient farm buildings, surrounded by the golden, rolling barley fields that grow some of the best Maris Otter barley in the world. Malted just down the road at Crisp Maltings and blended with pure water from our own borehole, each one of our beers is named after a favourite place or person on the estate, and we are proud to be the purveyors of a “Norfolk Born and Brewed” product in the truest sense.
